What type of learner are you?
Would you like to learn more on how to use KNIME software to develop professional data science applications? We have courses, books, videos, cheat sheets, and more, to help you. Where would you like to start from?
Not everybody learns in the same way. We all know that from our days in school. There is the visual learner, the abstract learner, the memory learner, the hands-on learner, etc … We have tried to compile differently targeted learning resources to accommodate all the different types of learners.
Here is a list of eleven common learner types that we have observed over the years.
 | The structured learner. This is the classic type of learner schools would like to have. One lesson after the other, one exercise after the other, slowly but consistently they progress in their learning process. We all had a classmate like this. |
 | The binge watcher. Binge watchers cannot stop watching entertainment as well as informational videos. There is always time to watch one more episode. And then one more. And then one more … |
 | The reader. Books do not scare them away. If at all, they actually attract them. For these learners, a book is the best friend and the best way to learn. |
 | The visual learner. Rather than reading a full book, some people prefer to read a webtoon, memorize a cheat sheet, or navigate a mind map. |
 | The chatterbox. This is the Q&A type. They like to ask people how to proceed, how to find the relevant nodes, which tricks to use, or the best practices. They need from time to time an exchange of information with a human counterpart. |
 | The competitive learner. Some people are driven by competition, with others and also with their past self. They need a set of challenges to tackle to know that they are improving. |
 | The influencer. These learners live on social media. They also prefer to learn, stay up-to-date, and share their knowledge on social media. |
 | The morsel learner. This might not be a learner type, but more someone who is constrained by life rhythms. There is no time for anything, even less for structured training that requires constant discipline. Learning bits and pieces here and there is the way! |
 | The jump-starter. This kind of learner doesn't usually attend a full course but at the same time craves a classroom-like training. They aim at jump-starting their learning process with a full-immersion introductory session. They will continue on their own later on, when they have time. The important thing for them is to get started. |
 | The hacker. Who needs a manual of instructions? Let’s just start hacking. |
 | The one who knows it all. Well, that does not need a description. |

For Structured Learners: KNIME courses. A free self-paced course or a paid course with an instructor, this option matches the needs of our structured learners. There are sections, a few lessons in each section, a few exercises for each lesson, and even a final test. Following a level-organized structure, the structured learner will assimilate new content each day until the conclusion of the course. Depending on the degree of previously acquired expertise, the structured learner can attend courses at different levels:

 | For Binge Watchers: KNIMETV on YouTube. All video lessons from the KNIME self-paced courses are also available on the KNIME TV channel on YouTube. Our binge watchers can skip the exercises and just spend a few hours watching the video playlists in their entirety: As a bonus episode, we would also throw in the mix the Data Science Pronto! playlist. “Data Science Pronto!” videos are 2-3 minute long videos focusing on obscure yet fascinating questions in data science and machine learning. |
For Readers: KNIME Press. This is the library of our learning center. Here our readers can find textbooks to learn the basic and the advanced features of KNIME Analytics Platform for data science and NLP; transitioning booklets to ease the migration from tool X (X being Excel, Alteryx, or SAS) to KNIME; and collection of blog posts around data blending, case studies, scoring, and guided labeling. For Chatterboxes: KNIME Forum. This is a free peer-to-peer support forum for the KNIME community. There are a number of spaces, each focused on a specific topic, where you can ask questions, often get answers, and all in all exchange opinions and advice with other KNIME users. It is the perfect place for our chatterboxes, who need a Q&A exchange with peer users to learn. |  |
 | For Competitive Learners: “Just KNIME It!” weekly challenges. At the beginning of 2022, we started a series of weekly challenges named “Just KNIME It!”. Here you can show off your KNIME skills while competing with other KNIME users, and, of course, also while learning more about KNIME and data science. Recognition badges are assigned at challenge milestones, if you reach them, to be proudly shown within the Just KNIME It section in the KNIME Forum and on social media. It is the perfect place for competitive learners. |
For Influencers: #66daysofdata. We also have something for people living on social media. #66daysofdata is a learning program where every day you set aside half an hour to progress a little in a selected topic. And, of course, you share the progress with your followers. Of course. So far, only a #66daysofdata roadmap around #datablending and #dataviz with #KNIME is available. We will add a few more soon. You can run the program on your own or in a guided session, of course on social media (Twitter and LinkedIn). |  |
 | For Morsel Learners: KNIME community journal. The previous challenge lives (pinned) on “Low Code for Advanced Data Science”, KNIME’s community journal on Medium. This journal is for and by the KNIME community. KNIME expert users share their knowledge and experience and KNIME newbies read the articles to learn more. There is even a section “Getting Started” for users moving the first steps in the world of KNIME. This resource is definitely a match for KNIME users with little and irregular free time on their hands. |
For Jump-Starters: Beginners Corner at Data Connect events. The space for the jump-starter is actually a corner: the Beginners Corner. This is a one hour (circa) tutorial with hands-on exercises where you learn the very basics and you get indications on how to continue on your own. It is easier to continue when you have started on a good foot already! The next Beginners Corner can be found at the next Data Connect event near you, like the Data Connect: Germany on Sep 7th or the Data Connect: North America on Oct 6th. |  |
 | For Hackers: The Beginners space on the KNIME Hub. Who needs an instruction manual? We can start building workflows immediately using the examples in the Beginners space on the KNIME Hub. Just download, import, and change as needed. |
For Know-It-Alls: The KNIME Certification Program. For the KNIME users who know it all already, we can just suggest getting certified. Take a certification exam in one of the expertise levels - L1, L2, and L3 - and become a KNIME certified user! By the way, the L1 certification exam is free. Remember: You need to be signed in the KNIME space to see the available exams and to enroll. |  |
